Italy has an extensive rail net work operating all over the country, with fares amongst the lowest in Europe. It is an excellent way of exploring Italy. If you are travelling by train you should check out trains in advance of travel. There are different sorts of trains in Italy ranging from the "locale" which is very slow and calls at all stations to the very fast "pendilino" or inter cities, which require you to make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance and pay a supplement, this is redeemable if the train is more than an hour late. Special tickets are available for multiple journeys or families travelling together. Some trains will not let you on it you are travelling under a certain distance. During the summer trains can be very busy so you are advised to book ahead where possible, arrive early if you are buying your ticket on the day of your journey as there are often long queues at the ticket counter. Tickets are valid for two months from the date of issue, often they be stamped before boarding the train. Luggage can be left in main stations, however, you should check opening times carefully.
