Public City Transport:
in Italy whether it be bus, tram or metro is all fairly reasonably priced. Tickets should be purchased at bus depots, bars, tobacconists and newsagents in advance of travelling as there are no purchase facilities on board. Tickets should be validated in the machine on the bus or tram and at machines on platforms for the metro.

Train Travel:
Italy has an extensive rail net work operating all over the country, with fares amongst the lowest in Europe. It is an excellent way of exploring Italy. If you are travelling by train you should check out trains in advance of travel. There are different sorts of trains in Italy ranging from the "locale" which is very slow and calls at all stations to the very fast "pendilino" or inter cities, which require you to make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance and pay a supplement, this is redeemable if the train is more than an hour late. Special tickets are available for multiple journeys or families travelling together. Some trains will not let you on it you are travelling under a certain distance. During the summer trains can be very busy so you are advised to book ahead where possible, arrive early if you are buying your ticket on the day of your journey as there are often long queues at the ticket counter. Tickets are valid for two months from the date of issue,often they be stamped before boarding the train. Luggage can be left in main stations, however, you should check opening times carefully.

Taxis:
are available in most towns, cities and resorts. You can find them at taxi ranks throughout cities, main station and bus depots. They can of course also be called. Taxis should have their metre running. It is always best to check the fare before boarding the taxi. Supplements are applied after midnight, on Sundays and holidays, luggage and long or out of town journeys.

Cars:
Italy has an excellent net work of motorways and roads. Tolls are payable on nearly all motorways. When entering a motorway make sure you follow the signs carefully -collect your ticket by pressing the red button at the automatic booth then proceed. On exiting the motorway hand in the ticket and pay the toll displayed, you may then proceed. On some stretches of motorway there is a fixed toll at entry. Motorways have a good provision of petrol stations, cafes and restaurants, distances between them are clearly signposted. Italian driving can take some getting used to particularly in and around cities, you will no doubt notice horn sounding and speeding as well as lane crossing. It is best to keep your own pace and try to keep your distance.
Driving Licence:
Visitors are advised to carry an International Green Card for their car (boats too) or other insurance. A British Driver’s Licence is valid in Italy but should be accompanied by a translation.
Speed Limits & Seat Belts:
Seat belts are compulsory. On motorways cars & motor cycles can travel at 1 30kmlhr. On country roads they can travel up to 9Okm/hr.ln built up areas the limit is 50km/hr.
Petrol Stations:
Motorway stations are generally open 24 hours 7days a week. Elsewhere they are generally open Monday to Saturday 08.30 -12.00 and 15.00-1 9.00. Some may have another a day of closure. On public holidays, there will be one station in the vicinity which is open. Most cars run on senza piombo~ or unleaded but you may need “super” the equivalent of 4 star, please check with the rental company.
Parking:
Outside cities and towns parking o he right hand side of the road is usually allowed excepting on motorways, at cross roads, on curves and near hilly ground that does not permit full visibility. If a vehicle is stalled or blocking the road because of mechanical trouble or any other reason, the driver must clear the road, if he is unable to do so he is obliged to warn other road users by placing a special triangular danger signal at a distance of at least 50 yards from behind the car. All vehicles must be equipped with these portable triangles, which can be obtained on hire from all Italian Automobile Club Offices and at Frontiers.
