Health Service:
As E.U. Members Italy and Britain have a reciprocal agreement on medical benefits, although these do not apply to either the self employed or unemployed. You should obtain an E111 Form and T5 information leaflet from your post office before departure. Doctors who belong to the Italian Social Security Scheme will then charge the minimum. Should you become ill, however, you are stronlgy advised to follow the procedures laid out in the medical cover part of your insurance. This means that if you have to contact a doctor you should obtain a receipt for any consultation or prescription paid on the spot so that you may submit a claim on your return. You should read your travel insurance carefully, however. Chemists (farmacia) have lists outside telling you who is open at night, Ofl Sundays and during public holidays. First Aid Service is called Pronto Soccorso. You can dial 113 for ambulance, fire or police.

General:
Form E111 is no longer valid.  You should obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK.  The EHIC is available free of charge through most UK post offices or through the UK Department of Health via their website at:  www.dh.gov.uk or by telephoning 0800 555 7777 and obtaining their leaflet "Health Advice for Travellers".  The EHIC is not a substitute for medical and travel insurance, but entitles you to emergency medical treatment on the same terms as Italian nationals.  You will not be covered for medical repatriation, on-going medical treatment or treatment of a non-urgent nature.

Insurance:
We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.  You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake.  Please see: Travel Insurance.

The Italian authorities may carry out SARS checks on passengers arriving from China at Fiumicino (Rome) and Malpensa (Milan) airports.
